Contemporary Cave

Calgary, Canada

Rust, or Iron Oxide, has been used for artistic expression for the entire history of human existence on this planet as a result of our iron-rich environment. We see it in almost every archaeological exploration of ancient social groups in clay pots and decoration, and in 40,000-year-old cave paintings, tools, jewellery, and architectural design , as well as in commercial or self-made paints of today. I work with concepts of change and time using the remnants of the oxidation of solid steel as a visual analogy for transience and the ephemerality of all matter.
